KB19612: URL link gets truncated when a dashboard is exported to PDF using MicroStrategy Web 9.x

Community Admin

• Strategy

SYMTOM:
When URL API link exceeds 1053 characters, the link will get truncated after the dashboard is exported into PDF using Strategy Web 8.x.

STEPS TO REPRODUCE:
Follow the steps below to reproduce this issue:

  • Create two dashboards A and B with the exact same prompts.
  • First prompt takes in a Customers hierarchy.
  • Second prompt takes in a Time hierarchy.
  • In dashboard A, create a text box that links to dashboard B using URL API with &promptsAnswerXML={&PROMPTXML} appended at the end.
  • The URL should look similar to: http://localhost/MicroStrategy/asp/Main.aspx?evt=2048001&documentID=IDofSecondDocument&viewMode=2&promptsAnswerXML={&PROMPTXML}.
  • In the property of the text box, make sure "Is hyperlink" is checked, as shown below:

  • Export dashboard A directly to PDF, choose the first two customers for the first prompt, and choose year 2006 for the second prompt.
  • Run the report, then click on the link to the second dashboard, and the prompt for the second prompt appears.

CAUSE
Adobe imposes a limit of 1053 characters on the URL length. Therefore, the URL was not truncated during the PDF generation inside Strategy. It was truncated by the Acrobat Reader when it renders the PDF. This issue is reproduced with different versions of Adobe. Since it is not truncated by Strategy, nothing can be done on the Strategy end.
