KB19799: How to create a service that sends the status of the MicroStrategy Intelligence Server Universal 9.x - 10.x in MicroStrategy Narrowcast Server 9.x - 10.x

For reporting purposes, the user may want to send the current status of the MicroStrategy Intelligence Server Universal 9.x - 10.x via an email alert or service within MicroStrategy Narrowcast Server 9.x - 10.x. The steps in this article provide an example of how this can be done.

For reporting purposes, the user may want to send the current status of the Strategy Intelligence Server Universal 9.x - 10.x via an email alert or service within Strategy Narrowcast Server 9.x - 10.x. The steps below provide an example of how this can be done.

The following example uses the Strategy Tutorial project for illustration purposes.

Note: The following steps assume that a network drive has been mapped on the Microsoft Windows machine that hosts Strategy Narrowcast Server 9.x - 10.x and points to the directory on Strategy Intelligence Server Universal 9.x - 10.x that contains the 'status-iserver.xml' file, which is usually located at:
<Strategy_Home>\IntelligenceServer
It's beyond the scope of Strategy Technical Support to provide the details on how to map the network drive; the user should contact their systems administrator for assistance on performing this task.

In Strategy Narrowcast Server 9.x - 10.x:

  1. Create a new 'Imported File' object that points to the 'status-iserver.xml' file.
  2. Create a new service for email delivery (SMTP) with the Service Wizard.
  3. Add the imported file as an attachment.
  4. For the advanced content options of the service definition, set the following control document script that will change the name of the attachment and set it to be a text file:
    ChangeAttachmentName = 'My Attachments.xml=ServerStatus.xml'
  5. Add a subscription set and schedule to the service.
  6. Save and close the service, name it 'Test'.

In Strategy Command Manager 9.x - 10.x:

  1. Create a script that refreshes the contents of the imported document used by the 'Test' service; name it 'Script.scp', as shown below:

    REFRESH IMPORTEDFILES IN SERVICE "Test" IN FOLDER "/Applications/My First Application/Services";

    This will ensure that the contents delivered are always up to date (dynamic) and not static from a single instance in which the properties for the server were listed.
  2. The user can then in turn add the following entry to the 'Script.scp' script so that the service is triggered upon refreshing the contents of its imported document with the Strategy Intelligence Server Universal 8.x status, as shown below:

    TRIGGER SERVICE "Test" IN "Applications/My First Application/Services";

  3. Execute the above script via the command line, as shown below:

    "C:\Program Files\MicroStrategy\Administrator\Command Manager\cmdmgr.exe" -w "Strategy_Tutorial_Delivery" -u Administrator -s "Tutorial" -f "C:\Program Files\MicroStrategy\Administrator\Command Manager\Script.scp" -o "RefreshService.txt"

In Microsoft Windows Desktop:

  1. For ease of use and the purpose of automation, the user can create a batch file with the following entry that will execute the script automatically:
    "C:\Program Files\MicroStrategy\Administrator\Command Manager\cmdmgr.exe" -w "Strategy_Tutorial_Delivery" -u Administrator -s "Tutorial" -f "C:\Program Files\MicroStrategy\Administrator\Command Manager\Script.scp" -o "RefreshService.txt"
  2. The user can then in turn associate the Microsoft Windows scheduler to run the batch file for the desired times at which the Strategy Narrowcast Server 9.x - 10.x service is desired to deliver the status of Strategy Intelligence Server Universal 9.x - 10.x.
    Note: It's beyond the scope of Strategy Technical Support to provide details on how to create a batch file or associate the Microsoft Windows scheduler to execute the batch file. The above example is only given for illustration purposes.

For further information on the parameters and syntax of creating Strategy Command Manager 9.x - 10.x scripts to use with the command line for Strategy Intelligence Server 9.x - 10.x metadatas, refer to:
