KB19865: “Execution is aborted per the Cartesian join setting” error is received when using a report as filter to reduce the number of elements of a prompt when the report generates a Cartesian join, even if the report-level setting allows Cartesian join

Stefan Zepeda

SYMPTOM

When users try to use a report-as-filter to limit the elements displayed by an attribute element list prompt, and the base report generates a Cartesian join, execution of the report is aborted even if the report-level setting allows their execution. In the following example, a user defines an attribute element list with the filter (report-as-filter) object limiting the elements displayed:

When clicking on Preview to review the displayed elements of the prompt, an error is received:

QueryEngine encountered error: The report contains a cross join in pass <Z> between <table X> and <table Y>.Execution is aborted per the Cartesian join setting.
ACTION

Strategy will continue to investigate and post updates as soon as they are available.
WORKAROUND

Change the 'Cartesian Join Warning' VLDB property to 'Execute' at the Database Instance level and deny execution at the report-level property:
