KB199366: Best practices to design or utilize mobile dashboards in offline mode in MicroStrategy Mobile

This article describes best practices to design or utilize mobile dashboards in offline mode in MicroStrategy Mobile.

Best practices to design or utilize mobile dashboards in offline mode in Strategy Mobile.
A scenario may exist where developers would like to design dashboards for particular end users for use while not actively connected to the Internet.  Below are some recommendations for offline dashboard use with Strategy Mobile.
In Strategy Mobile Settings on the mobile device...

  • Folder Caching should be ON
  • Clear on Close should be OFF
  • With Folder Caching, even if Strategy Mobile app is killed, user should still be able to navigate to cached dashboards
ka0PW0000000rsLYAQ_0EM440000002A2j.jpeg
  • Dashboards with Filtering selectors WILL NOT function in offline mode
  • Dashboards with Slicing selectors WILL function in offline mode

More information about selectors can be found below in the Additional Resources section.

  • Dashboards with Edit Links WILL function in offline mode IF AND ONLY IF the links are clicked and navigated through when online first to cache the source and destination locations
  • Links will appear grayed out if they were not navigated while in online mode -- this includes transparent images to act as links meaning they could appear as grey boxes instead
  • Dashboards with URL API to link WILL function in offline mode with the same stipulations as Edit Links

For prompting, only Answer Dynamically and Answer with default answer will work in offline mode.  Answer with same prompt from source, and prompt user do not work, and will appear grayed out in offline mode.

  • If linking with prompts, use either “Answer dynamically” or “Answer with default answer” to allow the links to be usable in offline mode

Transaction Services is supported for offline mode, and works as a queue system for the transactions submitted.  When the mobile app goes back to online mode, then the transactions in the queue will be submitted.  This feature was also designed so that there does not appear to be a timeout for the queued transactions, and these queued up transactions should also persist if the app closes manually or crashes unexpectedly.

  • Transaction Services can be used in offline mode, but the submitted transactions will wait in a queue until the app goes back into online mode
  • The queue can be found at the top of the mobile device
  • The queue can be reviewed manually via user navigation
  • Transactions in the queue will remain if app is closed manually or crashes unexpectedly
  • Transactions in the queue do not appear to have a timeout setting, so they should persist until they are submitted

Smart client: Determine whether offline or local transactions are reflected in the displayed grid immediately and then updated in the dataset when an Internet connection is reestablished. Select one of the following:

Lastly, behaviors of dashboards that were manually created and ran appear consistent with dashboards that are sent as mobile subscriptions to the mobile user's device.
Here is a screenshot of the mobile dashboard used to test these features and demonstrate them in the video included at the end of this tech note:

Summary of recommendations for offline use and design:

  • Ensure Folder Caching is ON and Clear on Close is OFF in the Settings section of Strategy Mobile
  • Use lightweight dashboards that do not rely on filter selectors to cache for offline modes.
  • Design dashboards at specific levels that show all data, and contain slicing selectors to make the data more viewable while in offline mode
  • Ensure all links are navigated through while online to ensure they are accessible in offline mode
  • This can be avoided by designing specific dashboards for offline analysis that do not heavily rely on linking
  • This can alleviate odd displays for the end user in case they do not click a certain text box, image, or other object as a link, which might take away from the dashboard's purpose
  • If linking with prompts, use either “Answer dynamically” or “Answer with default answer” to allow the links to be usable in offline mode
  • Transaction Services can be used in offline mode, but the submitted transactions will wait in a queue until the app goes back into online mode
  • Transactions in the queue will remain if app is closed manually or crashes unexpectedly
  • Transactions in the queue do not appear to have a timeout setting, so they should persist until they are submitted
