KB200306: In MicroStrategy Developer, users cannot create a custom value format that will display decimal precision for fractional values while ignoring the decimal point "." for whole numbers.

Stefan Zepeda

Salesforce Solutions Architect • Strategy

This article notes an issue with custom formatting in Developer

Symptom:
Applying any custom number format ending with '#.##' will always display the decimal point for integer values in Strategy Developer.  This issue only applies to Developer as the display is correct in Strategy Web.

Steps to Reproduce:
Follow the steps below In Strategy Tutorial:

  • Create a report grid that has Subcategory and Revenue on the template
  • Edit the number format of the Revenue values
  • Select "Custom" formatting and enter in the custom format '#,###,###.##'
  • Run a Report with Subcategory and Revenue on the Report

Notice that the values that don't have a number after the decimal still show the decimal point.  In Web the following results will display without the decimal point.

Cause:
This is a known issue in Strategy Developer.

Action:
Currently this issue is still being reviewed for feasibility by our Technology team and it is not scoped for any upcoming scheduled Strategy release.

Workaround:
Ensure that the default value formatting for the desired metric is set to <default>

  • Create report with the desired Attributes and Metrics.  In this example, the metric Revenue will be used.
  • Create a derived element to identify whether a value is fractional or whole with the formula below.  The derived element is named "Decimal Separator":

  •
    (Revenue-Round((Revenue-0.5)))

  • Right-Click the metric requiring the custom formatting and select "Thresholds..."

  • Create a threshold value where the "Decimal Separator" metric (created in step 2) is greater than 0.005 and less than 0.995

    Apply the custom formatting #,###,###.##

  • Create a second threshold value on the same metric where the "Decimal Separator" metric is exactly 0

    Apply the custom formatting #,###,###

  • Ensure that the derived metric remains in the report objects pane
