How to call a stored procedure after the creation of a data mart in MicroStrategy Developer 9.x and 10.x

In Strategy Developer, sometimes users wish to call a procedure that will manipulate the data after the execution of a data mart report.

PL/SQL stored procedures may contain only Data Manipulation Language (DML) and not Data Definition Language (DDL) unless users have modified this in the latest version of Oracle. This means only SELECT, INSERT, UPDATE or DELETE statements and conditional/programmatic logic are valid. Users cannot include any statements that CREATE or DROP anything, like a view or an index.

To invoke the procedure in Strategy Developer, users need to follow the steps below:

  1. Edit the report;
  2. Go to 'Configure Data Mart'
  3. Go to the third tab, 'SQL Statements'
  4. Include the following statement in the box: 'SQL to be executed after data mart creation': {call Procedure_name(arg1, arg2,..,argN)}

In case that more than one statement has to be inserted, users must define each procedure call as a Report Post Statement following these steps:

  1. Edit the report
  2. Go to Data / VLDB Properties.
  3. In the Pre/Post Statements Folder select Report Post Statement and insert the appropriate sentence.

The procedure shown above is an example for Oracle, but the same idea can be appropriately used for any Relational Database Management System (RDBMS).
