KB202288: Metric sorting for the Stacked Bar Graph sorts only by one attribute and not by the sum in Visual Insight in MicroStrategy Web 9.4.1.

SYMPTOM:
In Strategy Web 9.4.1, when using a stacked bar graph in Visual Insight, with two attributes, one of which is in the Break By section, metric sorting will not properly sort the bars, as shown below: 

The above graph is set to sort by the metric in Ascending order. Note how the graph is sorting by only the blue element, and not the sum of the blue and red elements.
 
STEPS TO REPRODUCE:
 

• Create an Excel Sheet with the data makeup like shown below:
  

• Import the data and create a Visual Insight dashboard.  The grid visualization should be identical to the Excel spreadsheet, as shown below:
  

• Create a stacked bar graph with the drop zone configuration identical to the screenshot below:
  

• Sort the graph by the Metric - Ascending, using the menu shown below:
  

• Note that the graph is sorting by only the blue element, and not the sum of the blue and red elements.

 
CAUSE:
This is a known limitation of Visual Insight in Strategy Web 9.4.1.  Currently, the Stacked Bar Graph does not support sorting on more than one series.  A request has been logged to address this issue.
 
ACTION:
This has been solved in Strategy Web 10.0. Users are recommended to upgrade Strategy to 10.x to avoid the problem.
