• Strategy

SUMMARY:
This technical note describes the differences between "Link to" project attribute form during Data Import Preview page and "Link to" project attribute in design mode of a Report Service document or Visual Insight dashboard.

What is Link to project attribute in design mode of a Report Service document or Visual Insight dashboard:
In Strategy Analytics Enterprise Web, leveraging the cube join feature, it is now possible to link an attribute from unmodeled dataset to an attribute from a report/cube dataset in design mode of a Report Service document or Visual Insight dashboard, as shown below:

For more information regarding this feature, refer to section "To link imported data in a VI dashboard or a document" in the following documentation:
KB000039514 : In MicroStrategy Intelligence Server/Web 10.x, how to map an imported attribute to a project attribute.

What is Link to (Map to) project attribute attribute form:
Prior Strategy 9.4.1, it is possible to "Map" imported data column to a project attribute form, as shown below:

For more information regarding this feature, refer to below technical notes:
About linking imported data to project attributes

What is the differences between them:
In Strategy Analytics Enterprise Web 9.4.1, the two features are combined together but still have slightly differences. The details are listed below:
1. When a data column from imported data is set as Attribute and published as Intelligence Cube, Strategy creates a managed objects automatically. When a data column is linked to a project attribute form in preview page, before save as cube, no managed objects will be created.
2. In data import preview page, a data column can be mapped to any form of a project attribute, such as DESC form, as long as this attribute's ID form is also mapped to another data column. When link to project attributes in document/dashboard, the imported attribute has to be linked to the ID form of a project attribute.
3. VLDB setting "Document Grid from Multiple Datasets" (Refer to KB44944) must enabled to use link to project attribute feature in document or dashboard because it leverage cube join feature. This setting will NOT influence link to project attribute form function in data import preview page.
