KB203542: Graphs in a Report Service document are not rendered in Express Mode with IBM WebSphere Application Server in MicroStrategy Web 9.4.x

Graphs in a Report Service document are not rendered in Express Mode with IBM WebSphere Application Server in MicroStrategy Web 9.4.x

Symptoms

In Strategy Web 9.4.x, graphs in a Report Service document are not rendered in Express Mode with an IBM WebSphere Application Server in Strategy Web 9.4.x
The issue happens when the following conditions match:

  • Report Service document is executed in Express mode.
  • Japanese character is used in the project name.
  • IBM WebSphere Application Server is used as an application server.

The same symptom is explained in the following Technical Note:
KB42089: Graph image in Dashboard is not rendered in Express Mode while other modes have no problem with the same graph with MicroStrategy Web 9.2.x

Diagnosis

This is a known issue with Strategy Web 9.4.x. Strategy encodes Japanese characters with UTF16 and escapes it with a percent sign in taskProc URL. However %uxxxx is not specified by any RFC, so that is why the IBM WebSphere Application Server throws IllegalArgumentException when it fails to encode with UTF8. For instance, %u3042 (‘あ’) is not found in UTF8 code point.

Solution

ACTION:
Contact Strategy Technical Support for an update on the status of this issue.

WORKAROUND:
Remove Japanese characters from the project name and use the project alias in Strategy Web to use Japanese characters.

Third Party Software Installation:
