This document explains how to configure a MicroStrategy Narrowcast server machine to recognize the UNC path (i.e. \\ComputerName\SharedFolder\Resource) of a web folder in the Microsoft SharePoint server.

This document explains how to configure a Strategy Narrowcast server machine to recognize the UNC path (i.e. \\ComputerName\SharedFolder\Resource) of a web folder in the Microsoft SharePoint server. Please follow these steps:

On the Strategy Narrowcast server machine:

  • Stop the Narrowcast system.
  • Go to Start > Control Panel > Administrative Tools > Services.
  • Locate "Strategy Distribution Manager" and "Strategy Execution Engine" services and modify the Log on account as the same NT domain account. In this case "DOMAIN\user" should be used in both services.
KB15307: New feature in Strategy Narrowcast Server 8.0.3: Start/stop system and services without Windows administrative privileges

  • Start the Narrowcast system.
  • Open an Internet Explorer browser. Go menu > Tools > Internet Options. Then, click on the "Security" tab.

  • Click on "Sites" to add the SharePoint server site to the "Trusted sites" list.

  • Note: Uncheck "Require server verification (https:) for all sites in this zone".
  • Back to the Internet Options > Security tab.  Click on "Custom level".

  • Navigate to User Authentication > Logon and select "Automatic logon with current user name and password".  Click OK to confirm all changes.

  • Go to Start > Control Panel > Administrative Tools > Services.  Start the "WebClient" service.

Note: For Windows XP and 2003, this service is installed by default. For other Windows versions, please consult the System Administrator for further assistance.

On the SharePoint Web server:

  • Go to IIS manager, set virtual server to use "Integrated Windows Authentication". The option can be accessed by the site properties > Directory Securities and under "Anonymous access and authentication control".

  • Log on to the SharePoint site, add the same NT domain user account (in this case, it's DOMAIN\user) as used in the Distribution Manager and Execution Engine services to the site with proper privileges to write into the target web folder.

  • Note: "Contributor" in this SharePoint site can add content to existing document libraries and lists.

Now, users should be able to access the web folder by using UNC paths (ex. \\home.Strategy.com\tech_supp\SharedDocuments). Users can check if above steps are set up successfully by logging in to the Strategy Narrowcast Server machine as the user set up in the Strategy Distribution Manager service(in this case, it is "DOMAIN\user") and typing a UNC path to a web folder in an Internet Explorer browser. If it prompts for entering credentials, the setup was unsuccessful.

Note: Currently, Strategy Narrowcast cannot send a *.mht file to a SharePoint web folder. For more details, please refer to the tech note:
KB20739: In Strategy Narrowcast 9.x, a service fails to upload a MHT file to a Microsoft SharePoint 2007 web folder.
