KB20403: 'Connection dead' error message occurs with the MicroStrategy ODBC driver for Oracle Wire Protocol sporadically against the metadata

Community Admin

• Strategy

The 'Connection Dead' error message usually occurs when the connection to the database is disconnected for some reason. When the Oracle database resides on a UNIX machine, one reason for such disconnection is a low value of the maxuproc setting (maximum number of processes per user).

SYMPTOM:
The following error message occurs (sometimes sporadically) when Strategy Intelligence Server attempts to communicate with the metadata using the Strategy ODBC driver for Oracle Wire Protocol:

Connect failed. Error type: Odbc error. Odbc operation attempted: SQLDriverConnect. Optional feature not implemented. Driver's SQLSetConnectAttr failed. Socket closed. Connection Dead. Connection String:...

This error message may also occur during connectivity to the warehouse or statistics database.
CAUSE:
The 'Connection Dead' error message usually occurs when the connection to the database is disconnected for some reason. When the Oracle database resides on a UNIX machine, one reason for such disconnection is a low value of the maxuproc setting (maximum number of processes per user). If there are other processes on the same Oracle machine (say for example, a Web Server) competing for the same resources, that could lead to this setting limit being reached more quickly.
ACTION:
Check the value for the maxuproc setting. The command to do so is as follows:

lsattr -El sys0

The default value is usually 128. Set this value to a higher number such as 4096. The command to do so is as follows:

chdev -l sys0 -a maxuproc=4096

NOTE:
The 'Connection Dead' message is a generic error message and there can be multiple causes. This technical note documented one such possibility. Another possibility is documented in the following Knowledge Base technical note:
KB17194 - 'Connection Dead' error message appears when performing a data load in MicroStrategy Enterprise Manager 9.x
