KB20406: Users take a long time to log in to MicroStrategy Intelligence Server in MicroStrategy Desktop or MicroStrategy Web

Community Admin

• Strategy

SYMPTOM:
One or more users take a long time to log in Strategy Intelligence Server 9.x via 3-tier project source in Strategy Desktop 9.x or Strategy Web 9.x. This behavior may not be seen for all users. No error messages are seen on the interface nor are there any errors recorded in the DSSErrors.log file.

If the Kernel -> User Trace is enabled from Diagnostics Configuration, a large number of the following messages are seen in the user trace log:

When the same user(s) attempts to log in from Strategy Desktop using a 2-tier Project the login process is faster.

CAUSE:
One of the reasons contributing to why the log in takes a long time when using a 3-tier project source is the user may have a large number of History List messages. When a user logs in to the Strategy Intelligence Server 9.x, all of the History List messages for that user are loaded into memory. If the number and/or size of these messages are large, the time it will take to load all of them increases. This will increase the overall processing time for the user to log in.

ACTION:
Clean up the user's inbox by removing history list messages that are no longer needed. There are two ways to do this:

  1. The user can manually delete the messages either from Strategy Desktop 9.x or Strategy Web 9.x
  2. The administrator can schedule an administrative task to delete the history list messages as required. Refer to the following Strategy Knowledge Base technical note for more information:
