KB204660 : “(The target group by section F#### of control F#### does not have a group by unit)” error occurs when attempting to open an Information Window in MicroStrategy Web

This article discusses an issue that can manifest in the metadata related to Information Windows in MicroStrategy Web.  The issue is that after some action like dataset replacement in a document, the error (The target group by section F#### of control F#### does not have a group by unit) occurs when trying to open the Information Window.

SYMPTOM:
Consider a scenario in which a user has configured a grid attribute in Strategy Web 9.4.x - 10.x to open up an Information Window with more details each time one of the attribute’s elements is clicked.  At first, the Information Window opens up with no issues, but at a certain point in time - potentially after object migrationion or dataset replacement, there user notices that after clicking on an attribute element, they receive the error in the following screenshot instead of the Information Window:

This prevents the user from accessing the Information Window and the information contained within.

CAUSE:
This issue is caused by a backend metadata property called a group by unit that is missing from the definition of the Information Window control.  Performing certain tasks such as dataset replacement can cause the group by unit field to become unset for the control defined in the F#### number in the error message.

ACTION:
Contact Strategy Technical Support for assistance in troubleshooting this issue.  If possible, be prepared to provide both a copy of the metadata in its current state and a backup copy from when the Information Windows worked as expected.

WORKAROUND:
If the Information Windows are not too complex, delete and recreate the Information Windows in question.  They will be recreated with the group by units in place.
