Summary:
This issue has been known to occur after migrating the Strategy Web Server from Apache Tomcat to Microsoft IIS, and only impacts Strategy Web 9.x and later. It is not currently understood why this issue occurs, however steps to resolve the issue are simple and are available in this Article
Symptom:
After migrating the Strategy Web Server from Apache Tomcat to Microsoft IIS, Quick Threshold images appear an X, when applied to a Metric.

Action:

  • In Strategy Web, navigate to Data >> Advanced Thresholds Editor, then double click on one of the broken images.

  • If the image then appears after appending “../” to the image’s relative path, the issue is caused by the inability of the web server to resolve the images relative path.

  • The Windows Administrator must access IIS on the Web Server machine, and navigate to the Strategy Web Site >> Strategy >> asp

  • If there is no subdirectory titled “Images”, this is the cause of the issue.
  • Right-click on the asp folder and select “Add Virtual Directory…”
  • Set the alias as “images”, and enter the path of the Images folder in the Physical path field. (By default, this is C:\Program Files (x86)\MicroStrategy\Web ASPx\Images)

  • Restart the Web Server.

Cause:
Upon installation of the Strategy Web Server, the shortcut to the Images folder was not created in the asp folder. This will not allow the Web Server to resolve the relative paths of images residing in that folder. Users may also experience a red X in the place of custom images placed in Documents executed in Strategy Web.  In is not currently understood why the shortcut is not created in these rare instances.
Additional Troubleshooting Steps:
If the workaround steps above do not resolve the issue, please consider calling Strategy tech support with the following information of troubleshooting already done:

  • Reproduce the issues in multiple web browsers
  • Confirm that threshold images exist in the quick threshold images folder. (By default this is C:\Program Files (x86)\MicroStrategy\Web ASPx\Images\quickThresholdImgs)
  • Determine if the web browser can access the image via its full file path. (For example http://TEST_SERVER/MicroStrategy/asp/images/quickThresholdImgs/stoplight_indi_grn_M.gif)
