KB206400: Subscriptions created from Command Manager "create subscription" outline using a report with a prompt, cannot dynamically use the prompt default answer in MicroStrategy 9.4.x - 10.x

Subscriptions created from the Command Manager create subscription outline using a report with a prompt cannot dynamically use the default answer in MicroStrategy.

SYMPTOM:
Subscriptions created from the Command Manager create subscription outline using a report with a prompt cannot dynamically use the default answer in Strategy. The prompt answer of the subscription cannot be changed by changing the default answer in the prompt object itself. The prompt answer can only be changed within the now personalised subscription.

STEPS TO REPRODUCE:
Perform the following steps:

  1. In Strategy Developer, create a report with the Day attribute and a date filter on the Day attribute with the default answer 9/30/14.
  2. In Command Manager, run the following script:

    CREATE EMAILSUBSCRIPTION "test123" FOR OWNER "administrator" SCHEDULE "test" ADDRESS "yifan" CONTENT "day report" IN FOLDER "\Public Objects\REPORTS" IN PROJECT "Strategy Tutorial" SUBJECT "<SUBJECT>" DELIVERYFORMAT PDF FILENAME "test" SENDTOHISTORYLIST FALSE;

  3. The subscription created will be personalised with a default answer.
  4. It is not possible to change the subscription's date answer by changing the prompt's default answer.

CAUSE:
This is a known issue with Strategy. This happened with the introduction of support for creating subscriptions of prompted reports with answers as a new feature in 9.3. The logic that allows for handling of prompt answers causes it to use explicit answers in all situations preventing just using the default as picked up from the prompt object dynamically.

ACTION:
Currently this issue is still being reviewed for feasibility by our Technology team and it is not scoped for any upcoming scheduled Strategy release.

WORKAROUND:
Remove the date prompt and create the email subscription with the report. Then add the date prompt back into the report.
