Certain MicroStrategy object editors don't display after disconnecting an external display which hosted the editors in MicroStrategy Developer 9.4.1

SUMMARY

This techincal note outlines an issue when trying to open certain editors in Developer where the editors don't display in the main monitor after disconnecting an external display.

SYMPTOM

Users may experience an issue after disconnecting a display which hosted certain object editors. For example, Developer is opened in the main window and an attribute editor is opened in the same window, however the Form Editor for one of the attribute's forms is opened in an external display as well as the Form Expression Editor. Upon disconnecting the display, those windows are not present.

CAUSE

The issue is related to the way certain versions of Windows handles open application windows in an external display.

ACTION

It is recommended to fully close out of any windows or move them to the main display before disconnecting the external display.

WORKAROUND

To retrieve the lost window, there are a few techniques that can be used. One of those is as follows:

  1. Open the hidden window.
  2. Use the Windows key on the keyboard and use the left and right arrow keys to move the window until it displays in the primary monitor.

The above may require you to cycle Windows and an arrow key several times until the window comes into view.
