KB20685: “A hierarchy on the template must be related to one or more attributes in the report filter, or it cannot be replaced by one (or multiple) attributes” error is received when executing a report in MicroStrategy 9.4.1 and 10.x.

SYMPTOM:
When executing a report that contains a hierarchy in the template, the following error is returned:

Error: SQLEngine got an Exception from DFC: A hierarchy on the template must be related to one or more attributes in the report filter, or it cannot be replaced by one (or multiple) attributes.

STEPS TO REPRODUCE:

1. Create a report with the 'Year' hierarchy and 'Revenue' metric on the template and filter on attribute 'Category'.
2. On executing the report the user receives the above error.

 
CAUSE:
In the report, users have defined at least one hierarchy that cannot be resolved to an attribute.
The SQL Engine cannot decide which attribute to choose from the hierarchy, because there is no filter criteria. This refers to an attribute used in the defined hierarchy.
 
ACTION:
Apply a filter to the report, which contains an attribute defined in the hierarchy, or replace the hierarchy by an attribute.
