KB207490: Differences between the "Input is required" check box in Web and the "Required" drop down in MicroStrategy Developer and above when used with Transaction Services.

Differences between the "Input is required" check box in Web and the "Required" drop down in MicroStrategy Developer and above when used with Transaction Services.

Throughout the workflow of setting up and using a Transaction Services document in Strategy 9.x, users will come across two similar settings in Developer and Web in regards to required inputs:

  • The "Required" drop down inside of the freeform transaction editor of Developer

This setting dictates whether or not the SQL Engine wil insert a NULL as part of the SQL if no value is specified for that field when submitting the transaction. If the setting is set to Yes, a NULL will be placed in the SQL where there would be a value. Otherwise, no text will be placed there.
The input object is only included in a transaction if a user selects to update its value. If the users define an input object as optional, they should ensure that the syntax of the statement would be accurate if the input object is not included in a transaction.

  • The "Input is required" check box in the Configure Transaction window in Web

This setting dictates whether the Web interface will allow a transaction to be submitted if a field with this setting enabled does not have a value to be inserted/updated. If the setting is off, no warning will be displayed in Web when trying to submit the transaction. If the setting is checked and there is no input defined for that field, the following error will be thrown when trying to submit the transaction:

When creating a Transaction Services document, users should leverage these two settings. The settings themselves are independent of each other and show different behavior when used in different combinations, outlined below for when no input is defined in the transaction:

To avoid driver errors, users have two options:

  1. Change all inputs to required for the transaction, which will insert a NULL in the SQL in place of the column. This is ideal in the VALUES clause of an Insert transaction.
  2. Define input-dependent SQL or XQuery. With the input-dependent text highlighted, right-click and select Input-dependent Text. No dialog box should appear when doing this, and the SQL should change dynamically. This is ideal in UPDATE and WHERE clauses for Update and Delete transactions.

Information on how to define SQL/XQuery in conjunction with input-dependent text can be found in the "Defining input-dependent SQL or XQuery syntax" section of the Advanced Reporting Guide in the Product Manuals.
