KB20871: How to eliminate the large blank space allotted for the Detail section when data only exists in the Detail Header and Footer sections of a Report Services Document in MicroStrategy

This technical note describes how to eliminate the large blank space allotted for the Detail section when data only exists in the Detail Header and Footer sections of a Report Services Document in MicroStrategy 9.x. Follow the actions in this technical note to fix this behavior.

SYMPTOM:
In Strategy Web and Desktop 9.x, users may notice that there is a large blank section reserved for the Detail section of a report service document when the only data displayed is contained within the Detail Header and Detail Footer sections. It is possible to shrink/hide the Detail section if no data is meant to be displayed within it.
STEPS TO REPRODUCE:
Use the following steps to reproduce this issue in Strategy Desktop or Web 9.x under the Strategy Tutorial project:

  • Create a report service document and place a simple grid in the detail header and detail footer sections. Notice that when the document is run, there is a gap displayed for the detail section, though there is no data contained within it.

  • Unchecking the 'Visible' option and checking the 'Hide If Empty' properties of the Detail section make no difference as the gap still displays.

CAUSE:
The Detail Footer and Detail Header sections need to be set to 'Can Shrink' via properties, and the Detail section needs to be set to 'Hide if Empty'.
ACTION:

  • Access the properties menu for the Detail Header and Footer sections by right-clicking each section respectively.
  • Under the Layout tab, check the option for 'Can Shrink'.

  • Access the Layout tab under the Properties of the Detail section and check off the option 'Hide If Empty'.
  • Run the document and notice that the gap for the Detail section has been eliminated.
