This Knowledge Base article describes an issue that occurs in MicroStrategy Intelligence Server Universal 9.4.x due to a missing configuration in MySQL.

SYMPTOM:
In Strategy Intelligence Server Universal 9.4.x installed on Red Hat Enterprise Linux, when configuring access to a metadata hosted by a MySQL instance using Strategy Configuration Wizard, after entering with the database login, the message below is displayed:

Can’t connect to local MySQL server through socket /tmp/mysql.sock

NOTE:
In this case, MySQL is installed on the Strategy Intelligence Server machine.
CAUSE:
Since the MySQL instance is installed on the same machine as the Strategy Intelligence Server, Strategy Intelligence Server uses the socket connector instead of the TCP/IP connector to access the database. As the socket file is configured to be written in a directory that MySQL server doesn't have permissions to write, this error occurs.
ACTION:
Contact the systems administrator to provide the required permissions.
