Stefan Zepeda

Salesforce Solutions Architect • Strategy

This document outlines an error received when running reports containing derived elements with complex derived element members and is only seen on MicroStrategy versions 9.4.1 Hotfix 2 - 9.4.1 Hotfix 5. This issue has been classified as a defect with MicroStrategy Analytics Enterprise 9.4.1 Hotfix 2 - 9.4.1 Hotfix 5 and has been addressed in MicroStrategy Analytics Enterprise 9.4.1 Hotfix 6.

SUMMARY
This document outlines an error received when running reports containing derived elements with complex derived element members and is only seen on Strategy versions 9.4.1 Hotfix 2 - 9.4.1 Hotfix 5. This issue has been classified as a defect with Strategy Analytics Enterprise 9.4.1 Hotfix 2 - 9.4.1 Hotfix 5 and has been addressed in Strategy Analytics Enterprise 9.4.1 Hotfix 6.

SYMPTOM
In Strategy Analytics Enterprise 9.4.1 Hotfix 2 - 9.4.1 Hotfix 5, the following error occurs when running reports with derived elements which contains complex calculation elements or list elements:

(Error(s) occurred while loading report: DSSSQLEngine: Schema loading error: Template (Local Template). -Template Unit-Template Attribute-Template Attribute-Derived element expression is too deep!.Error in Process method of Component: SQLEngineServer, Project Gazprom, Job 80, Error Code= -2147212797.)

One example of a complex derived element expression is it contains 150 calculation elements.

Below entries are observed in DSSErrors.log:

[Engine][Error][0x80042203] Error(s) occurred while loading report: DSSSQLEngine: Schema loading error: Template (Local Template). -Template Unit-Template Attribute-Template Attribute-Derived element expression is too deep!.
[Kernel][Error] [XXXXXX][Administrator][JobID=80] (Error(s) occurred while loading report: DSSSQLEngine: Schema loading error: Template (Local Template). -Template Unit-Template Attribute-Template Attribute-Derived element expression is too deep!.Error in Process method of Component: SQLEngineServer, Project Gazprom, Job 80, Error Code= -2147212797.)/pre>

CAUSE
This is a known issue with Strategy Analytics Enterprise 9.4.1 Hotfix 2 - 9.4.1 Hotfix 5. The depth of the derived element is calculated incorrectly and results in this error.

ACTION
This issue has been fixed in Strategy Analytics Enterprise 9.4.1 Hotfix 6. Upgrade to this version to take advantage of the fix.
Note: The fix does not allow users to have an unlimited depth on the derived element members. The maximum allowed depth is 200. The depth of the derived element cannot be calculated through the GUI and is internal to the code. If this error is encountered on Strategy Analytics Enterprise 9.4.1 Hotfix 6 or later, users are likely running into this limit. Users are encouraged to review the derived element member(s) definitions and try to simply the most complex members.
The Strategy Internal Reference Number for the issue discussed in this technical note is 937137.
