SYMPTOM:
When a user clicks on a prompted document’s icon in Strategy Web, its execution takes half the time it takes when the same document is executed via an URL-API link (containing the same prompt answers).
STEP TO REPRODUCE:
1. Within the Strategy Tutorial project, create a report with Year and Cost.
2. Add an element prompt on Year in the report.
3. Create a Report Services document using the report as a dataset.
4. Insert the following URL-API link to the document into the document itself (e.g. defined on a static text):
./Main.aspx?evt=2048001&documentID={DOCUMENTID}&PromptAnswerMode=1&elementsPromptAnswers=8D679D5111D3E4981000E787EC6DE8A4;8D679D5111D3E4981000E787EC6DE8A4:2011&originMessageID={&DOCUMENTMESSAGEID}
5. Save the document with the “Do not display prompt and use the current answers as the default answers” option checked.
6. Run the document
7. Click on the URL-API link. Issue is reproduced here.
CAUSE:
The cause of this performance difference is that the document is executed twice when clicking on the URL-API link.
When a prompted document is executed via an URL-API link containing prompt answers, Strategy Web will send a “run document” request first and an “answer prompt” request second.
During the “run document” request, the document will be executed in a full flow and, since there is already a default answer, users will not be prompted.
Then, in the “answer prompt” request, Strategy Web will send the prompt answer defined in the URL-API link and here the document is executed for the second time.
ACTION:
This is a known issue with Strategy 9.x that was resolved in 10.x.
WORKAROUND:
There are two possible workarounds to this issue:
1. Save the document with the “Display prompt and use the current as the default answers” option. However, after applying this workaround, users will be prompted when executing the document in Strategy Web.
2. Add “&execFlags=180228” string to the URL-API link, just after the "documentID" parameter. This would prevent the document for being executed twice.
In the above example, the URL-API link would be modified as follows:
./Main.aspx?evt=2048001&documentID={DOCUMENTID}&execFlags=180228&PromptAnswerMode=1&elementsPromptAnswers=8D679D5111D3E4981000E787EC6DE8A4;8D679D5111D3E4981000E787EC6DE8A4:2011&originMessageID={&DOCUMENTMESSAGEID}
The Strategy Internal Reference Number for the issue discussed in this technical note is 861190.
