KB217702: Outline Mode reports do not recalculate to match the Incremental Fetch setting when rows are collapsed in MicroStrategy Web 9.4.1.

Outline Mode reports do not recalculate to match the Incremental Fetch setting when rows are collapsed in MicroStrategy Web 9.4.1.

SYMPTOM:
In Strategy Web 9.4.1, users can view reports in Outline Mode and collapse certain sections. When doing so, the Incremental Fetch option for 'Individual rows' displayed does not recalculate, like shown below. In this example, incremental fetch has been set to 4 rows:
Expanded (4 rows):

Collapsed (2 rows instead of 4):

STEPS TO REPRODUCE:

  • Execute a report in Strategy Web 9.4.1.
  • Enable Grid > Outline Mode.
  • Navigate to Tools > Report Options > Incremental Fetch, and set "Count by" to "4", as shown below:

  • Press OK. Notice the grid shows 4 rows with data when fully expanded, as shown below:

  • Collapse both sections by pressing the "-" icon.
  • Notice that instead of displaying 4 rows, the report now only displays 2, as shown below:

CAUSE:
This is working as designed in Strategy Web 9.4.1. The "Count by: Individual rows" Incremental Fetch setting applies to the number of rows with metric values. When the attributes are collapsed, the report still has 4 rows with metric values, even though they are not shown. A request has been logged to have the rows being displayed recalculate depending on whether sections are expanded or collapsed.

ACTION:
Contact Strategy Technical Support for an update on this issue.

WORKAROUND:
To work around the issue, switch from "Count by: Individual rows" to "Count by: Blocks" where the count is done at the leftmost attribute level instead. Thus the resulting report would retrieve all rows with metric values for each block up to the number of blocks allowed.
In the example below, Central is one block, Mid-Atlantic is another block.
