KB218685: "DB Instance object 'XXX' (ID: XXX) cannot be deleted because catalog object 'Catalog - XXX' (ID: XXX) in project 'XXX' (ID: XXX) depends on it." error returned when trying to delete a database instance.

This technical note outlines an issue found when attempting to delete a database instance.

SYNOPSIS

This technical note outlines an issue found when attempting to delete a database instance.

SYMPTOMS

When trying to remove a database instance, users may encounter the following error:

ka0PW0000002vQPYAY_0EM440000002CCI.jpeg

"DB Instance object 'XXX' (ID: XXX) cannot be deleted because catalog object 'Catalog - XXX' (ID: XXX) in project 'XXX' (ID: XXX) depends on it."

This error will be seen even if the database instance is successfully unchecked from Project Configuration for the project returned in the error message.

CAUSE

A catalog object is created in the backend for a project when objects using a particular database instance are brought into a project. Depending on the nature of the error, this can be due to an unexpected reference found in the metadata.

ACTION

If the database instance is still checked as an available database instance for any project in Project Configuration > Database Instances > SQL Data Warehouses, please ensure the database instance is unchecked from every project in the metadata before attempting to delete the database instance. If it is not removed, the above error message can refer to the Warehouse Catalog catalog object or a database table object. In that case, there are database tables that are still using that particular database instance which need to be modified to no longer use that database instance.
If the database instance has been successfully unchecked from all projects in the metadata and the error occurs for a catalog object with the naming convention "Catalog - XXX", this implies there is a lingering catalog object in the specified project that was not removed upon unchecking the database instance in Project Configuration.
Contact Strategy Technical Support for further assistance with this issue. A full backup of the metadata is required in order to properly troubleshoot the issue.

WORKAROUND

Since this catalog object should have been removed when unchecking the database instance from the project, we have seen that many times, re-doing the action will clean up the lingering catalog object.  To do this follow the below steps.
1) Go into Project Configuration of the project listed in the error message.
2) Go to Database Instances -> SQL Data warehouses
3) Select the database instance you are trying to delete so it is part of the project again.  Save and Close
4) Go back into the Project Configuration of the same project and navigate to Database Instances -> SQL Data warehouses.
5) Uncheck the database instance again so it is removed from the project.  Save and Close.

After this, the database instance should be able to be deleted.  If the database instance still cannot be deleted, please contact Strategy Technical Support.
