SUMMARY
This document describes possible causes for an inability to reduce the size of an Enterprise Manager statistics database. The impact is limited to Strategy Enterprise Manager tables in 9.4.x and newer on Oracle database. The situation described in this tech note is specific to Oracle versions 10 and newer.
DESCRIPTION
A user wishes to purge unneeded or obsolete information from the statistics database, using one of the several available methods that Strategy offers:
Purging at the Server level

Purging at the Project level.

Scheduling an automatic purge

The purge is successful, but after checking the size of the statistics tables, the user sees that the statistics database seems to still be rather large.

CAUSE
One possible cause of this could be that the user has an Oracle database. Oracle does not perform free memory allocation. This means that when data is deleted, the space that the data was occupying does not become free. It has to be manually reallocated before it will show as empty space. For example, if a user was to delete 10GB of data from the statistics database, the database would not shrink; Instead, the next 10GB of data added to the server would just fill up the space previously occupied by that deleted information.
ACTION
A system administrator should be able to reallocate this space so that it will show the free space. If that doesn't work, it would be best to contact Oracle Support.
