KB220908: How to Set the Default Refresh or Re-run Document Preference Setting with MicroStrategy Web SDK 9.4.1

Community Admin

• Strategy

The refresh behavior preference can be set to a different default value using a system defaults change with the MicroStrategy Web SDK.

In Strategy Web there is a project level preference under Preferences > General > Refresh report to either:

  1. Retrieve data from the latest valid Intelligence Server cache
  2. Re-run against the warehouse.

In a document, the "Refresh" button corresponds to the first option in the Preference.

The "Re-run" (Re-execute) button corresponds to the second option in the Preference.

The icon is the same, but have different actions depending on the Preference setting.

There is also a "Web re-execute report against warehouse" user privilege under Web Reporter. To ensure that only users with the "Web re-execute report against warehouse" privilege can see the latest data from the data sources when they select Refresh, select Re-run against the warehouse (option 2). When this option is selected:

  1. For users who have the "Web re-execute report against warehouse" privilege: The Re-run Report option is available in the Data menu, but the Refresh option is not. Users can re-run the report with data from data sources by selecting Re-run Report.
  2. For users who do not have the "Web re-execute report against warehouse" privilege: The Refresh option is available in the Data menu, but the Re-run Report is not. Users can refresh the report from its cache by selecting Refresh.

Developers may want the preference to be set for users by default. This can be done by changing the sys_definitions.xml with the following customization:

  1. Launch the Web Customization Editor.
  2. Create a new plug-in and give it a meaningful name. (For step by step instructions on creating a new plug-in, please navigate toHome > Web SDK > Customizing Strategy Web > Web Customization Editor > Features and Customizable)
  3. Click in Strategy Web Configurationinside the Application Settings view to expand the hierarchical tree. The expanded list comprises the different settings that can be modified to perform customizations.
  4. Navigate to Web Configuration Settings > System Definitions.
  5. Locate 'reportReexecute 'and open it to edit.
  6. Change the scope to “server” and value to "0" or "1".

0= Retrieve data from latest valid IS cache

1= Re-run against the warehouse.

  1. Save changes and restart Web to see the change take effect.

The example provided in this document is provided “as-is” and user has read the following customization warning:
