How to embed horizontal bar graphs into a column of a grid in Report Service Document in MicroStrategy Developer 9.4.1

In some business scenario, it is needed to embed graphs into a grid column to make the grid more visualized. Just like the image below, the rightmost column is a horizontal bar graph where the length of the bar stands for the absolute value of each item’s profit, while red color represents positive value and green represents negative value.

This kind of grid can be created by combining a normal grid and a horizontal bar graph together. But it is usually very time-consuming to make everything aligned and make the combination natural. And if there are many rows of data, this combining method cannot achieve scroll bar effect.
Microcharts Widget can be used to achieve this effect though. Below is the detailed steps about how to make use of bullet module in Microcharts Widget to generate a grid & horizontal bar graph combination:

  • Create a metric “zero” using the syntax: ApplySimple(“#0”,0);
  • Copy & paste metric “zero” three times to generate another three metrics;
  • Create metric “Max” using the syntax: ApplySimple("#0", MaxProfit). Here MaxProfit is the max value of Profit metric across all items;
  • Copy & paste metric “Profit” to generate metric “Profit1”;
  • Copy & paste attribute “Item” to generate another attribute “Item”;
  • Create a report and add above two attributes and seven metrics;
  • Create a dashboard and add the report as dataset;
  • Create Microcharts Widget and place the attributes and metrics in the widget by the orders shown in below image:

  • Run the dashboard in Flash mode and the required effect is achieved. Grid and horizontal bar graph are combined, and also the scroll bar is coming out if there are too many rows for one page to display.
