NOTE: This technical note applies to Strategy product installations on Windows operating system only - it does not apply to installations on UNIX/Linux operating systems.
A Hotfix is a file or a collection of files that can be applied to Strategy products installed on a machine to correct a specific problem. Hotfixes are packaged in an executable (.exe) file, which is a self-installing format.
In a response.ini file or a silent installation scenario, users do consider the feasibility of installing a Hotfix right after the installation of Strategy Generally Available (GA) products without rebooting. That is, they would like to install the Strategy GA products and then not reboot that machine and install the Hotfix immediately thereafter.
Generally, users cannot do this. If the Strategy GA products install requires a reboot, the machine needs to be rebooted before the Hotfix install can be executed. A reboot is required means that some file was locked during installation and needs to be replaced upon reboot. If, for example, one of these files is also part of the Hotfix and if a reboot was not done prior to executing the Hotfix, the Hotfix would update the file. But then the next time the machine was rebooted, the operating system would replace the file with the one stored for the original install and the file would no longer contain the Hotfix fixes.
In a response.ini file or a silent installation scenario, it is not possible to pre-determine whether a reboot is needed after the installation of Strategy GA products on the machine. Whether a reboot is needed or not is completely dependent on the operating system, Service Pack Level, other software installed on the machine, and other applications/services running at the time of installation.
NOTE: The Hotfix install does not contain a check to determine if a reboot is required at the beginning of the install. This check is present in the Strategy GA product install.
