KB235381: How to Change or Remove the MicroStrategy Favicon Displayed in the Browser Using MicroStrategy Web SDK

There is a small MicroStrategy icon which appears next to the URL in the browser when using MicroStrategy Web. This image is called a favicon and it is a browser feature which is associated with a particular website or web page.

There is a small Strategy icon which appears next to the URL in the browser when using Strategy Web 9.4.1. This image is called a favicon and it is a browser feature which is associated with a particular website or web page.
Before Customization:

Users may decide that they may not want to see this image or want to change the image.  Note that when the image reference is removed, underlying favicon.ico images may be displayed in its place if another application specifies one.
After Customization:

Developers can follow the steps below to modify the favicon image using the Web Customization Editor in 9.4.1:

  1. Open the Web Customization Editor.
  2. Open the Strategy Web Configuration > Pages and open the Default (-1) page.
  3. Click on the Template Properties tab.
  4. Click on Modify next to the mstrWeb.aspx/jsp file reference to modify the template file. If prompted, agree to create a copy and edit the copy.
  5. Comment out the lines in the files that call the favico.ico, as shown below, or change the icon image to a different desired image:

    Or Change to a custom icon that is residing in the plugin file:

  1. Repeat steps 2-5 for the Wait.aspx/jsp file, which can be found on the "Processing" tab of the Default Page.
  2. Save these changes
  3. Go to the default jsp folder in Strategy Web and copy Error_Content.jsp and Empty.jsp and paste it in your plugins/customplugin/jsp folder.
  4. Restart the Web Server

 
For removing the favicon when running a Report Services Document in Express Mode, perform the following steps:

  1. In the WCE, expand Pages and search for the oivm (Optimized Interactive View Mode) page and double click to open.
  2. Switch to the ‘Template Properties’ tab
  3. Click on Modify next to the Mojo_Template.aspx/jsp file reference to modify the template file. If prompted, agree to create a copy and edit the copy.
  4. Next, minimize the WCE, and open the plugin using Windows Explorer. Navigate to jsp/Mojo_Section.jsp file and copy this file to your plugins/customplugin/jsp folder.
  5. Open this file and make the following change and resave the file:

         Comment/change this line:

  1. Relaunch the WCE and refresh the plugin.
  2. Modify  the Mojo_Template.aspx/jsp file again and make the following change

         Change this:


<jsp:include page='/jsp/Mojo_Section.jsp' flush="true" />

        To this:

<jsp:include page='/plugins/ customplugin /jsp/Mojo_Section.jsp' flush="true" />

  1. Save the Changes, restart the web server and see the results.

For removing the favicon for the Error Page, perform the following steps:

  1. In the WCE, expand Pages and search for the error(Error page) page and double click to open.
  2. Switch to the ‘Template Properties’ tab
  3. Click on Modify next to the Error_Template.aspx/jsp file reference to modify the template file. If prompted, agree to create a copy and edit the copy.
  4. Next, minimize the WCE, and open the plugin using Windows Explorer. Navigate to jsp/Error_FullContent.jsp file and copy this file to your plugins/customplugin/jsp folder.
  5. Open this file and make the following change and resave the file:

         Comment/change this line:


<link rel="shortcut icon" href="../style/mstr/images/favicon.ico" type="image/x-icon" />

  1. Relaunch the WCE and refresh the plugin.
  2. Modify the aspx/jsp file again and make the following change

         Change this:

         To this:

<jsp:include page='/plugins/customplugin /jsp/Error_FullContent.jsp' flush="true" />

  1. Save the Changes, restart the web server and see the results.

 
The example provided in this document is provided “as-is” to the user and assumes that the user:

  • Can program, compile (e.g. javac, jikes, etc.), and execute Java programs
  • Can configure environment variables (e.g. JAR files, property files, etc.)
  • Have all the necessary tools to create Java applications (JDK, IDE, etc.)
  • Has access to the Strategy SDK documentation.
  • Has read the customization warning at the bottom of this document

PREREQUISITES: 
For the sample to work, the Strategy Web JAR files must be accessible by the Java Runtime Environment. The Strategy Web JAR files can be found under:

  • Strategy Web Universal (JSP): {web_root}/WEB-INF/lib directory.
  • Strategy Web (.NET): Program Files\Common Files\Strategy directory.

Note: More elaborate programs will require additional library files and are out of the scope of this document.

However, before changing the way Strategy Web products look or behave, it is helpful to understand how the application is built.
