KB235707: “Optional feature not implemented” error message appears when executing a query that contains the addition or subtraction of timestamps against an Oracle database

This technical note describes the error “Optional feature not implemented” that appears when executing a query that contains the addition or subtraction of timestamps against an Oracle database

SUMMARY:
This issue has been classified as an enhancement by Strategy.  The impact is limited to queries which add or subtract timestamps that are being executed against an Oracle database. There is a workaround available in the current document.  A solution/code fix for this issue is not available in current releases but is being reviewed for a future Strategy release.

SYMPTOM:
In Oracle when two timestamps are added or subtracted, the following error is seen:

Optional feature not implemented.

CAUSE:

In Oracle when two timestamps are added or subtracted, the result is an Interval datatype which is not a supported datatype in Strategy.  An enhancement request has been submitted to support the Interval datatype.

ACTION:
Currently, this issue is still being reviewed for feasibility by our Technology Team and is not scoped for any upcoming Strategy release.

WORKAROUND:
If the timestamps being added or subtracted are in a metric:
In the metric editor, check the box to “Allow smart metric”.  The metric will now be calculated in the Analytical Engine, and will not be executed in the SQL against the database.

If the timestamps being added or subtracted are in an attribute:
Use an ApplySimple statement to cast the datatype to a supported datatype.  For example, the ApplySimple statement below can be used and will cast the timestamp to a varchar data type.

ApplySimple("substr(to_char(#0-#1),12,8)", TIME_ONE, TIME_TWO)
