This technical note describes the hang on startup in experienced by the Intelligence Server on Linux operating system connecting to Oracle 12c database due to incorrect IANAAppCodePage value set in the odbc.ini file.

SUMMARY
This technical note describes the hang on startup in experienced by the Intelligence Server on Linux operating system connecting to Oracle 12c database due to incorrect IANAAppCodePage value set in the odbc.ini file.

SYMPTOM
When configuring the Intelligence Server on a Linux/UNIX operating system to a Metadata in Oracle 12c database, the Intelligence Server takes over an hour to finish if there are projects loaded on startup.  After configuring, when trying to restart the Intelligence Server, it will again take over an hour to start.  If there are no projects configured to load on startup, the Intelligence Server will start in a timely fashion.

CAUSE
The IANAAppCodePage value in the odbc.ini file for the Metadata DSN does not match the code page used by the Orace 12c database.  By default, the IANAAppCodePage value is set to 111 when the DSN for the Oracle database is created.

ACTION
 Follow the steps below to use the correct IANAAppCodePage value:

  1. Connect to the Oracle 12c database and run the SQL statement

    SELECT value FROM nls_database_parameters WHERE parameter='NLS_CHARACTERSET';

  2. Compare the value returned from the SQL statement with the table found in IANAAppCodePage Values

    For example, "WE8MSWIN1252" corresponds to "WINDOWS_1252" which is IANAAppCodePage value of "2252"
  3. Modify the IANAAppCodePage value for the DSN entry in the odbc.ini file from the default 111 to the correct value determined above
  4. Restart the Intelligence Server and normal startup time is observed

The Strategy Internal Reference Number for the issue discussed in this technical note is 1007845.
