KB243886: MicroStrategy Intelligence Server 9.4.1 Hotfix 8 seems unresponsive under high loads in a clustered environment

This document describes an issue which has been classified as a defect by MicroStrategy. The impact is limited to MicroStrategy 9.4.1 Hotfix 8 Intelligence Servers operating in a cluster. A code fix for this issue is available in MicroStrategy 9.4.1 Hotfix 9.

SYMPTOM
In a Strategy Intelligence Server 9.4.1 Hotfix 8 clustered environment, the performance gets affected or the Intelligence Servers become unresponsive, while operating under high loads. The symptoms include but are not limited to below:

  • Slowness when logging in to the environment
  • Slowness when navigating through folders
  • Users being unable to execute any reports/documents

Entries similar to the following can be seen in the DSSErrors.log.


[HOST:NODE-A][PID:120364][THR:2127103744][Kernel][Info] MSIClusterManager::hThreadSendAndReceiveMessage(): Info - sending a messages <104> to node <NODE-B> is not completed before <20000> milliseconds timeout.
[HOST:NODE-A][PID:120364][THR:2127103744][Kernel][Error] ClusterManager::SendAndReceiveMessage() failed: HResult = -2147202924.
[HOST:NODE-A][PID:120364][THR:2127103744][Kernel][Warning] ClusterManager::Validate(): Server <NODE-B> not responding (failed): HResult = -2147206913. Try one more time.

 
It is seen that the following measures have been taken to improve the general performance of clustering environment, but it does not help address this slow performance.

  • Registry key SkipClusterChecking is enabled according Technical Document below:

KB47195: In a Strategy 9.2.x - 9.4.x clustered environment, when one of the machines hosting the Strategy Intelligence Servers is shutdown, the performance of other Strategy Intelligence Servers in the cluster is affected

  • Registry key UserClusterSynchThread is enabled according Technical Document below:

KB240525: Improving responsiveness of Strategy Intelligence Server 9.4.x in a cluster by enabling the “UseClusterSynchThread” setting
CAUSE
This is a known issue with Strategy Intelligence Server 9.4.1 Hotfix 8.
ACTION
This issue has been fixed in Strategy 9.4.1 Hotfix 9. Upgrade to this version to take advantage of the fix.
The Strategy Internal Reference Number for the issue discussed in this technical note is 1015438.
