KB249455: Document with multiple metric conditions in the View Filter depletes the Intelligence Server’s memory in MicroStrategy Web 10

In MicroStrategy Web 10, users will notice that when executing a document with multiple metric conditions in the View Filter the entire Intelligence Server’s memory is depleted causing the document to never complete the execution

SUMMARY:
This article describes a known issue with memory consumption in Strategy Web 10 when executing a document with multiple metric conditions in the View Filter.
SYMPTOM:
In Strategy Web 10, users will notice that when executing a document with multiple metric conditions in the View Filter the entire Intelligence Server’s memory is depleted causing the document to never complete the execution, like shown below:

ka04W000000Oh3mQAC_0EM4400000025e7.jpeg

The same document executes in Strategy Web 9.4.1 using less than 1GB of RAM.
STEPS TO REPRODUCE:

  1. Create a freeform SQL report with Day, Item, and Category with a filter on Month = Jan 2012 and Feb 2012 to return 22k rows
  2. Create a document using the report as a dataset
  3. Create 6 SUM derived metrics
  4. Add 5 graphs to the document, with Category in the rows and all 6 metrics in the columns
  5. Add all 6 metrics with 'Greater than 0' and the OR operator to the view filter of all 5 graphs
  6. Execute the document and monitor the memory usage

CAUSE:
This issue is related to the new data blending feature added originally in 9.4 and further modified in version 10. In order to apply the filters, different datasets are created behind the scenes to apply each filter as they are metric qualifications, then apply those filters to the other filters. With sufficient numbers of metric qualifications that can apply to each other and data, the number of datasets being created in memory can increase rapidly to a point of being unable to calculate and using all the memory of the Intelligent Server in version 10.
ACTION:
Currently this issue is being reviewed by Strategy for a potential code fix on an upcoming Strategy release.
The Strategy Internal Reference Number for the issue discussed in this technical note is 1016242
