KB260918: Creating A Plugin To Locally Store External Resources For Use In MicroStrategy 10.0-7 Web Customizations

Guidance for locally storing external resources, such as javascript files and images, for use in MicroStrategy Web Customizations.

Summary

Resources such as images or javascript files can be hosted on external web servers and may still be used within customizations. Browsers commonly allow external resources to be loaded as part of a web page, although this may vary depending on individual browser security configuration.
The drawback in using externally hosted resources is that the time taken to load these resources could contribute to overall loading time in functions Strategy Web dependent on these.
An example of these is custom visualizations. These often require additional javascript libraries to function, and cannot be rendered until the javascript dependencies have fully loaded.

The plugin architecture can be use to host files and resources within a local plugin on the Web server as an alternative. After downloading these external resources and storing them within a plugin deployed with Strategy Web, these can then be referred to using a relative URL pointing to the specific resource within the plugin.
Storing these resources within the local network may reduce loading time if any functionality is dependent on them, and may also address issues with browsers potentially preventing external resources from loading due to tightened security settings or other factors.

Locally hosting javascript files

  • Navigate to the "plugins" folder in the Strategy Web deployment. For example:
ka0PW0000000omPYAQ_0EM440000002GNz.jpeg
  • Inside the "plugins" folder for Strategy Web, create a new folder with the name "_Resources".
Note: the exact plugin name used here is not important.
  • Inside the "_Resources" folder, create a new folder named "javascript".
  • Download the desired javascript file and save it within this "javascript" folder.
  • In the customization, refer to the javascript file using the following relative URL structure:

    file://../plugins/_Resources/javascript/javascriptfile.js

For example, the following is the relative URL for a resource defined for a custom visualization, viewed in the Visualization Builder:
ka0PW0000000omPYAQ_0EM440000002GNy.jpeg
  • The "d3.v3.min.js" file was downloaded and stored within "plugins/_Resources/javascript":

ka0PW0000000omPYAQ_0EM440000002GNw.jpeg

Locally hosting image files

  1. In the "_Resources" plugin folder created in step 2 above, create a folder named "images".
  2. Download and save the desired image within this "images" folder.
  3. Where required, refer to the image using the following relative URL structure:

    file://../plugins/_Resources/images/myimage.png

Best practices for locally storing resources within a plugin

  • Avoid using common file names with similar file-system structures used by Strategy Web, such as "global.css" within a folder in the plugin named "style".
Files stored within the plugin in a similar file system structure to out-of-the-box files may be automatically loaded by Strategy Web, which may not be desired.
  • Avoid using symbols in the names of any files or folders stored within this resource plugin.
  • For production environments use minified versions of javascript libraries to further reduce load time. Minified resources have all unnecessary characters reduced from source code without changing functionality, reducing file size. The impact is more noticeable in larger resources.
  • Use the "file://" prefix for local relative URLs, as this would allow the same relative URL to work in Strategy Web, Desktop and Mobile.
