KB263684: How to import data from Google Analytics in MicroStrategy Web

Community Admin

• Strategy

Users can import website statistics data from a Google Analytics account to create reports, dashboards, and documents. Data can be imported from Google Analytics by using the pre-built queries in MicroStrategy or by creating a Google Analytics query to select specific data to import.

INTRODUCTION
In Strategy 10.x, users can import website statistics data from a Google Analytics account to create reports, dashboards, and documents. Data can be imported from Google Analytics by using the pre-built queries in Strategy or by creating a Google Analytics query to select specific data to import.
PREREQUISITES

  1. An account with Google Analytics (this account has to be created in https://analytics.google.com).
  2. Strategy Web must be accessible via HTTPS
  3. Pop-up blockers disabled on the browser (or allowed for the requests from Strategy Web and Google Analytics)
  4. A FQDN with a TLD(top-level domain). Google would not be able to get the callback URL without a top level domain
  5. The intelligence server machine must be able to connect to www.googleapis.com and accounts.google.com through HTTPS

STEPS TO CONNECT TO GOOGLE ANALYTICS
 Configuring the Google Analytics account

  • Log into the Google Analytics developer zone through https://console.developers.google.com
  • In the Google Analytics developer zone, create a project.
  • Select the project and navigate to API Manager > Overview. Enable the Google Analytics API by searching for Analytics API:

  • Navigate to API Manager > Credentials. Select New Credentials > OAuth client ID.
  • Select Web Application in the Client ID creation screen.
  • Fill out Authorized redirect URIs with the callback URL:

The Callback URL takes the following syntax:
ASP

https://WebServer/MicroStrategy/asp/Main.aspx?evt=3172

JSP:

https://WebServer/MicroStrategy/servlet/mstrWeb?evt=3172

Note that "WebServer" needs to be filled with FQDN(with a TLD. i.e: www.example.com end up in .com or .org, etc) of the Web Server. After the end user logs into Google using the browser, Google response will redirect the user to the web server.

Once the Client ID is created, get the Client ID and Client secret. These will be used for the Oauth parameters along with the callback URL.

Configuring Strategy Web

  • Access Strategy Web through HTTPS and login as an Administrator user to the project where the user wants to import data from Google Analytics.
  • Select Add External Data.
  • Hover over the Google Analytics icon and click on ‘Set OAuth Parameters’. Set the Callback URL, the Client ID, and the Client Secret. Enter the Callback URL saved in step 7 of Configuring the Google Analytics Account into the Callback URL field. Next, enter the Consumer Key into the Client ID field. Finally, enter the Consumer Secret into the Client Secret field.

  • Now all users that have the Data Import privilege will be able to access this particular Google Analytics account through Strategy Web.
  • Select the Google Analytics icon to launch the pop-up window to log into your Google account.
  • Once authenticated, the window will display to allow for import:
