“Metadata server initialization failed because of version violation” error occurs when connecting to a project source in MicroStrategy 10.x

SUMMARY:
This document describes an error that can occur when trying to connect to a project source in Strategy 10.x.

DESCRIPTION:
When trying to connect to a project source the following error is seen:

ka02R000000kboRQAQ_0EM440000002C2V.jpeg

Metadata server initialization failed because of version violation:
You are connecting to a metadata repository with software using API Version 9400, while the metadata repository requires API version 10000. Please contact your system administrator.

CAUSE:
The error occurs because Strategy 10.x is not backwards compatible with Strategy 9.x versions. For example, if a Strategy 9.4.1 installation of Developer is used to connect to a project source that points to a Strategy 10.x metadata then the above error will be seen.

ACTION:
Upgrade the client product that is being used to connect to the project source to Strategy 10.x.
