KB274580: "No server defined. You can add a server at Preferences" error appears when trying to import *.mstr files downloaded from MicroStrategy Web 10.1 and imported into MicroStrategy Analytics Desktop 10.1

"No server defined. You can add a server at Preferences" error appears when trying to import *.mstr files downloaded from MicroStrategy Web 10.1 and imported into MicroStrategy Analytics Desktop 10.1

SYMPTOM:
In Strategy Web 10.1 Secure Enterprise Platform, Visual Insight dashboards can be downloaded into a self contained file with the *.mstr extension. For more information on this, refer to tech note KB46047: New Feature in MicroStrategy Web 9.4.1 Hotfix 1: Import MicroStrategy mstr file
These *.mstr files can be imported back into other Strategy SE environments or into the stand-alone Strategy Analytics Desktop client. When creating an *.mstr file off a Visual Insight Dashboard from Strategy Web 10.1, importing it into a Strategy Analytics Desktop 10.1 shows the following error message:

ka04W000000Obw1QAC_0EM4400000025W2.jpeg

Server connection missing
No server defined. You can add a server at Preferences.

Note: This issue does not occur when creating the *.mstr file from a Strategy Analytics Desktop 10.1 and importing it into another Strategy Analytics Desktop 10.1. This issue also did not occur in Strategy 10.0 Secure Enterprise Platform.

STEPS TO REPRODUCE:

  1. Create a simple Visual Insight dashboard in Strategy Web 10.1.
  2. From the Visual Insight interface, go to File > Download dashboard. This will create the *.mstr file.
Note: The privilege "Export to Strategy File" from the "5. Common Privileges" group is required to see this option.
  3. Using Strategy Analytics Desktop 10.1, import the .mstr file. This can be done by double clicking the *.mstr file from a machine with Strategy Analytics Desktop 10.1 installed. Or go to File > Open.
  4. Notice the error message. Another symptom is that it could request the user to login if a Strategy Web Server has been defined already in the Preferences > Server Connections.

CAUSE:
This is an identified defect in Strategy Web 10.1 Secure Enterprise Platform.

ACTION:
This issue has been addressed in Strategy Web 10.2 Secure Enterprise Platform. Upgrade to this version to take advantage of this fix.
