KB274618: "You do not have access privileges to project" error appears when executing a URL obtained from the Share Link menu in MicroStrategy Web 10.x

Community Admin

• Strategy

This article details the following: In order to get the URL to an object inside MicroStrategy Web 10.x, users can right click on the object > Share > Link. This URL should contain all the necessary parameters to execute that object. However, when executing a URL taken from the share menu on a browser without an existing MicroStrategy session, users receive a "You do not have access privileges to project" error

SYMPTOM:
In order to get the URL to an object inside Strategy Web 10.x, users can right click on the object > Share > Link. This URL should contain all the necessary parameters to execute that object. However, when executing a URL taken from the share menu on a browser without an existing Strategy session, the the following error appears on the login page:

ka04W000000OfDjQAK_0EM4400000025XC.jpeg

Error in login
Strategy Intelligence Server error: (You do not have access privileges to project '<project name>'.)

STEPS TO REPRODUCE:

  • In the Strategy Web Admin page, enabled Guest authentication.
  • Navigate the to Strategy Web Main page and find an object to share.
  • Right-click on the object and choose Share > Link.
  • Grab the URL provided, as shown in the image below:
ka04W000000OfDjQAK_0EM4400000025XD.jpeg
  • Log out of Strategy Web and execute the URL from the share window, on the browser's address bar.
  1. Notice the error in the Strategy Web login page.

CAUSE:
This is an identified defect in Strategy Web 10.x. When Guest authentication is enabled, even if it is not the default authentication mode, the URL created by the Share > Link menu will include the parameter:

&connmode=8

This parameter forces Guest authentication. When Guest Authentication has not been setup, and a valid MicroStratgy session has not been created yet, the URL will attempt to log in with Guest authentication, which will fail, and the above error is displayed.

ACTION:
Currently this issue is still being reviewed for feasibility by our Technology team and it is not scoped for any upcoming scheduled Strategy release.

WORKAROUND:
If Guest authentication has not been setup, disable it from the Strategy Web Admin page to prevent the addition of the &connmode=8 parameter in the URL. Or manually remove the parameter from the URL before executing it on the browser's address bar. The default authentication mode will be used, which should not throw the error.

The Strategy Internal Reference Number for the issue discussed in this technical note is DE25331.
