This technical note describes the issue in which connecting to Actian Vector3.x Database via mstrtodbcx fails in MicroStrategy Intelligence Server Universal 10.x on Linux

SYMPTOM:
In Strategy Intelligence Server Universal 10.x on Linux, connecting to Actian Vector3.x Database via mstrtodbcx, below error occurs:

[Error] Connect failed.

Error type: Odbc error. Odbc operation attempted: SQLDriverConnect. [82:0: on SQLHANDLE] 523 80 Connection String: DSN=xxx;UID=xxx;

Sometimes users may see below error:

CAUSE:
The issue can happen in any of the scenarios as follows:

  1. Incorrect ODBC driver is installed.
  2. DSN information is incorrect from odbc.ini file.
  3. The ODBC driver path has not been specified in odbc.sh file.

ACTION:

  1. Verify the Database Version to see if it is certified or not.
  2. Verify the ODBC Driver used is the certified version, and the driver needs to be 64-bit in Strategy 10. Below command can be used to confirm with Customer:
    • Get output of file "version.rel" under location of installed driver, i.e. /opt/Actian/Vector_Client/ingres/
    • Under location of installed driver, i.e. /opt/Actian/Vector_Client/ingres/lib and get the output of command: "file libiiodbcdriver.1.so"
  3. Verify the DSN information in odbc.ini file.

    [DSN NAME]
    Driver=<location of installation of Ingres driver>/lib/libiiodbcdriver.1.so
    Description=
    Vendor=Ingres Corporation
    DriverType=Ingres
    Server=<NAME or IP ADDRESS OF DATABASE SERVER>
    Database=<NAME OF DATABASE HOSTING WH TABLES>
    ServerType=Ingres
    PromptUIDPWD=
    WithOption=
    RoleName=
    RolePWD=
    DisableCatUnderscore=N
    AllowProcedureUpdate=N
    UseSysTables=N
    BlankDate=N
    Date1582=N
    CatConnect=N
    Numeric_overflow=N
    SupportIIDECIMAL=N
    CatSchemaNULL=N
    ReadOnly=N
    SelectLoops=N
    ConvertThreePartNames=N
    Dbms_password=
    IngresDate=Y
    StringTruncation=N

  4. Verify if the driver path has been specified in ODBC.sh file. Add below entry to ODBC.sh file under <Home directory of Strategy installation>/env folder:

    #
    # ODBC Driver for Actian Vectorwise
    #
    II_SYSTEM=/opt/Ingres/IngresII

    if ; then
                    export II_SYSTEM

                    mstr_append_path LD_LIBRARY_PATH "${II_SYSTEM:?}"/ingres/lib
                    export LD_LIBRARY_PATH
    fi
