KB276421: Creating a Custom Visualization with a Specific Name Creates a Corrupt Plugin in MicroStrategy Web 10.0

SYMPTOM
The following steps reproduce this issue:

• Create a new visualization in the Visualization Builder.
• Open the "Properties" tab within the Visualization Builder.
• Define the visualization name as "Reingold-Tilford Tree" and click "Apply".
• From the "File" menu in the menubar, select "Save as".
• Define the name as "Reingold-Tilford_Tree".

 
The following error is displayed:

Error parsing xml definition: '/plugins/Reingold-Tilford_Tree/WEB-INF/xml/styleCatalog.xml'.

• Navigating to the "plugins" folder in the deployed Strategy Web shows that a plugin with the name "Reingold-Tilford Tree" was successfully created.
  
• The visualization doesn't appear when trying to open it in the visualization builder.
• After restarting the Web server, the Visualization Builder may appear to "hang" with this "corrupt" plugin in the "plugins" folder.

 
CAUSE
This is a known issue with the Visualization Builder 10.0 due to the specific visualization name used during the creation of the visualization plugin.
 
ACTION
Contact Strategy Technical Support for an update on this issue.
 
WORKAROUND

1. Remove the "corrupt" visualization from the "plugins" folder.
2. Restart Strategy Web.
3. Recreate the visualization using a visualization name without the symbolic characters, e.g. "ReingoldTilfordTree".
