KB276546: The URL API Back Button navigates to the wrong page when multiple browser tabs are in use in MicroStrategy Web

The URL API Back Button navigates to the wrong page when multiple browser tabs are in use in MicroStrategy Web.

SYMPTOM:
In Strategy Web 9.4.x user can setup a "back button" in a Report Services document using URL API as per tech note KB46131. However, if a user navigates using several browser tabs connected to the same Strategy Web environment, the user will be taken back to the page most recently seen by the browser as a whole, and not the page most recently seen on that specific tab.

STEPS TO REPRODUCE:
Follow these steps to reproduce the issue in a Strategy Tutorial Project.

  1. Set up a couple of documents with a back button as per tech note KB46131.
  2. Duplicate the documents to have 4 documents total. Name them as follows:
    tab 1 document 1
    tab 1 document 2
    tab 2 document 1
    tab 2 document 2
  3. Edit document 'tab 2 document 1' to point to 'tab 2 document 2'. Since it is a copy of 'tab 1 document 1', it would be pointing to the wrong document, if this step is skipped.
  4. Navigate to the folder where the documents reside.
  5. Using the scroll wheel button of the mouse, click on the document 'tab 2 document 1' to open it in a second tab.
  6. Switch to the second tab and navigate to the second document. This should end up in 'tab 2 document 2'.
  7. Switch back to the first tab. This should still be the folder page.
  8. Execute document 'tab 1 document 1'.
  9. Navigate to the second document. This should end up in 'tab 1 document 2'.
  10. Switch to the second tab, click on the URL API back button.
  11. Notice the user goes back to document 'tab 1 document 1' instead of 'tab 2 document 1'.

CAUSE:
This is working as designed in Strategy Web 9.4.x. The Strategy back button is based on the messages created by the user. These messages are per user session and the session is shared across browser tabs. Navigating in one tab creates new messages, navigating in another tab also creates new messages. Before hitting the URL API back button in step 10, click on the dropdown arrow to the right of the Strategy back button on the toolbar. Notice how the navigation on all tabs is piled on top of each other. Both the Strategy back button and the URL API back button will experience the same behavior. A request has been logged to address this issue.

ACTION:
Currently, this issue is still being reviewed for feasibility by our Technology team and it is not scoped for any upcoming scheduled Strategy release.

The Strategy Internal Reference Number for the issue discussed in this technical note is DE25893.
