KB287852: In 10.1 Hotifix 1 adding external data is very slow or unresponsive compared to version 9.4.

Due to a known issue, importing data from excel or text file into cubes in Microstrategy Web 10.1 Hotfix 1 the process is extremely slow compared to version 9.4.

SYMPTOM:
When importing data from excel or text file into cubes in Strategy Web 10.1 Hotfix 1 the process is extremely slow compared to version 9.4. When looking at CPU usage it reaches 100% until data import is completed.
For example excel file with 27000 rows in Strategy 9.4 takes 1 minute to import and the same file in Strategy 10.1 Hotfix 1 takes over one hour. The timeout error apears after one hour.

CAUSE:
Data import and Intelligent Cubes have changed in version 10.1. A change in the Analytical Engine allows it to detect relationships and apply them.

WORKAROUND:
Disable the auto-detect relationship feature in 10.1. This can be done by adding a key in the registry with steps below:

  1. Back-up the registry on the I-Server machine or the MSIReg.reg file if the I-Server is on a UNIX/Linux machine.
  2. Navigate to: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Wow6432Node\MicroStrategy\
  3. Add the key "DataImport" and underneath that add the key "AutoDetect". The path should look as follows: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Wow6432Node\MicroStrategy\DataImport\AutoDetect

 4. Add a DWORD called "NeedAutoDetect", it should be set to "0".

If the I-Server is on a UNIX/Linux, the same steps need to be followed for the MSIReg.reg file. Once this is done, the I-Server needs to be restarted.

ACTION:
This issue has been fixed in Strategy version 10.2. Upgrade to this version to take advantage of the fix.
