KB289023: Is it possible to change the name of the MicroStrategy Intelligence Server startup script on Linux operating systems when registering the server to run as a Service ?

Community Admin

• Strategy

When the Strategy Intelligence Server is registered as a service, a startup script is created that allows it to automatically restart the Intelligence Server after an Operating System restart.
There are two ways to register the Strategy Intelligence Server as a service:

  • From the Configuration Wizard: on the Specify a Port Number page – “Register Intelligence Server as a Service option” needs to be checked
  • From the command line: in ~/MicroStrategy/bin by entering: mstrctl -s IntelligenceServer rs

The technical note KB14175: "How to setup MicroStrategy Intelligence Server Universal so that the Server is automatically restarted if it is unexpectedly shutdown?" explains the additional steps that need to be implemented to enable the automatic startup functionality.
The startup script is created in /etc/init.d/ directory with a name:
mstr-<InstallName>-iserver-CastorServer
Where InstallName could have a value such as "InstallName"="root@2015-10-21T10:09:23" - it contains a date and time of the installation, e.g. /etc/init.d/mstr-root@2015-10-21T10:09:23-iserver-CastorServer.
One might need to change the name of the script, so it does not contain the date and time information, for example when one needs to have the same name of the scripts on all machines for some monitoring purposes.  It is possible to do that, but also a change of the InstallName in the registry has to be performed, so the automatic startup feature works without issues.
For example, if a startup script has the following name: "mstr-root@2015-10-21T10:09:23-iserver-CastorServer", it can be changed to "mstr-root@-iserver-CastorServer", but in MSIReg.reg file (which is located in the Strategy home folder) "InstallName"="root@2015-10-21T10:09:23" needs to be changed to "InstallName"="root@" (in the HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\MicroStrategy\DSS section). The Strategy Intelligence Server should be shut down when modifying the MSIReg.reg for the changes to be applied.
Registry Modification Warning:
Modifying registry values incorrectly may cause serious, system-wide problems that may require the re-installation of Microsoft Windows. Any edit of the registry is done at the user's own risk. Since these are user-initiated changes, they are not covered by any Strategy warranty. If using Microsoft Windows, the user should backup the registry and/ or update an Emergency Repair Disk prior to alterations.
