KB300895: In Report Page-by when a higher attribute is selected the lower attribute defaults to an element which was not chosen by the user

• Strategy

In Report Page-by when a higher attribute is selected the lower attribute defaults to an element which was not chosen by the user.

Symptom

In Strategy Web, by default when an attribute from a higher level is selected in report group-by, the level lower to it should default to total or first element. The elements in lower level shall only update when the user selects a specific element.

Under some situation, user may notice when a higher attribute is selected the lower attribute defaults to an element which is not chosen by the user. E.g. When user choose Year=2014, the Quarter attribute in group-by jump to 2014 Q3 instead of Total or 2014 Q1.

Steps to reproduce

Follow below steps to reproduce with Strategy Tutorial project:
1. Create report with Year--Quarter--Month in page-by.
2. Run report directly, result: Year=2012, Quarter=2012 Q1 and Month=JAN 2012
3. Change page-by, when change Year element, Quarter and Month defaults to it's first value.
4. Save report with below selection: Year=2014, Quarter=2014 Q3 and Month=Aug 2014 (make sure every single selector is touched.)
5. Go to folder list and re-run report, result: Year=2014, Quarter=2014 Q3 and Month=Aug 2014
6. Change page-by, when change Year element to 2012, Quarter and Month defaults to it's first value which is 2012 Q1 and JAN 2012. When change Year element to 2013, same result, Quarter and Month defaults to it's first value which is 2013 Q1 and JAN 2013. When change Year again to 2014, Quarter defaults to 2014 Q3 and Month defaults to Aug 2014, which is previous saved value. Issue happens.
7. Change selections again to Year=2012, Quarter=2012 Q1 and Month=JAN 2012 and re-save report. (Make sure only 1st selector is touched, the 2nd and 3rd remain untouched.)
8. Go to folder list and re-run report, result: Year=2012, Quarter=2012 Q1 and Month=JAN 2012.
9. Change page-by, when change Year element to 2013, Quarter and Month defaults to it's first value which is 2013 Q1 and JAN 2013. When change Year again to 2014, Quarter defaults to 2014 Q3 and Month defaults to Aug 2014, which is previous saved value in step4.
10. This time, save report with Year=2013, Quarter=2013 Q2, Month=Apr 2013 (Make sure 1st and 2nd selectors are touched, the 3rd remain untouched.)
11. Go to folder list and re-run report, result: Year=2013, Quarter=2013 Q2 and Month=Apr 2013.
12. Change selections again to Year=2014, Quarter and Month will automatically defaults to 2014 Q1 and Jan 2014, which is expected. But if then change Quarter to 2014 Q3 (this is previously saved value in step 4), the Month attribute then defaults to Aug 2014 which is previously saved value in step 4, not the first element.

Cause

Steps above indicate that Strategy save each page-by selector with it's status individually. If user previously saved report with a specific element, after that, re-save report with default selection without manually touch the selector, it will not overwrite the selector status. Only when user manually change the selection, Strategy will overwrite the saved result.

Action

To revert the behavior back, simply run the report, change every selector to the value user want to keep as default selection and save the report.
Note even when the first Year selector is changed, Quarter and Month selector will automatically jump to the first value, user still need to manually touch those 2 lower level selectors. User need to change Quarter to something else like 2012 Q2, and then back to 2012 Q1. Same for Month. If those selectors are left as its default status without manually touched, though it looks same, it will not be saved.
