KB30211: Advanced metric sorting requires subtotals to be enabled when related attributes are present in the page-by and in the columns of the report for the sorting to work for every page-by selection in MicroStrategy Developer

SYMPTOM:
Advanced sorting on a metric does not get applied for every page-by selection when related attributes are present in the page-by and in the columns of the report in Strategy Developer.
 
STEPS TO REPRODUCE:
Follow the steps below to reproduce this issue in the Strategy Tutorial project:

• Place the Category attribute on the rows.
• Place the Quarter attribute and Profit metric on the columns.
• Place the Year attribute on the page by.
• Since we have an attribute in the column execute the report before applying any advanced sorting on the metric columns. For further details refer to Technical Note:
  KB17645 (KB5700-8X-2981): Advanced metric sorting that is set before the report is executed when an attribute is located in the columns will not be applied in MicroStrategy Desktop 8.x
• For page by set to Year = 2014, enable sorting on Profit in Advanced Sorting and set it to Descending and choose sort by criteria as Q1 2014, as shown below:
  

• Now change the page by to Year = 2015, execute the report and notice that it is not sorting, as shown below: 
  

CAUSE:
When related attributes are present in the page by and in the column of the report the attribute element for the metric columns to sort are different for each page by selection, and therefore the Criteria for sorting cannot be kept constant for each page by selection.
 
ACTION:
Enable subtotals on the report. Enable advanced sorting on the metric and set it to Descending and choose sort by criteria as total. Now the sorting works for all page by selections.
