How to pass a single selector element to a page-by when drilling on a Report Services Documents in MicroStrategy Web.

Drilling in Report Services documents is a new feature available in Strategy 9 and is only possible through Strategy Web. When drilling on documents with an element selector on the document, the selected element can be carried on to the drilled down document. For example if the document has an element selector associated with the ‘Year’ attribute and attribute element ‘2006’ is chosen as the selection, the child document will only include data where ‘Year = 2006’.

  • In Strategy Desktop 9.x create a report with Year, Category, Subcategory attributes in the rows and Revenue metric in the column.
  • Create a document. Add the grid to the detail header section.
  • Add an element selector for the ‘Year’ attribute.
  • Save and close the document.
  • Execute this document in Web in interactive mode and enable drilling in the document.
  • Notice the Revenue for Art & Architecture for Year 2006 is $114,301 as shown below:

  • Now drill down to ‘Item’ from Art & Architecture Subcategory and show subtotals. Notice that the Revenue for Art & Architecture for Year 2006 is $114,301 as shown below:

This feature works well for a single selection element selector.   However, selectors with multiple selectors will only pass the first selector as a page-by value.  Contact Strategy Technical Support if the ability to pass multiple selectors to page-bys is desired.
