KB30246: What is an object cache and how is it calculated in MicroStrategy

Stefan Zepeda

Salesforce Solutions Architect • Strategy

An object cache is a recently used object definition stored in memory on MicroStrategy Desktop (for 2-tier) and MicroStrategy Intelligence Server (for 3-tier).

INTRODUCTION
When a user browses an object (application, configuration or schema) definition, an object cache is created. An object cache is a recently used object definition stored in memory on Strategy Desktop (for 2-tier) and Strategy Intelligence Server (for 3-tier).
Users can control the amount of memory that object caches can use on both Intelligence Server and the Strategy Desktop machines. This memory is referred to as the cache pool. If a new object request size is small enough to fit into the object cache pool, but there is not enough available cache pool space to store all of the new objects, existing objects must be removed from memory before the new ones can be cached. When this happens, the least recently used 25% of object caches are removed from the cache.
Configuring Application and Schema Object Caches
The amount of memory for application and schema object caches can be configured via Project Configuration ->Caching ->Maximum RAM Usage (Mbytes).
In Strategy 8.x, the default lower bound (minimum value) for Maximum RAM Usage governing setting is 10240 KB. Strategy 8.x assumes that each object occupies 5K of memory. So the number of cached objects is limited to 2048 (10240/5). This means the setting is based on the number of objects in cache, instead of the memory usage of those objects. For more information on object cache behavior in Strategy 8.x, refer to the following Strategy Knowledge Base Document:
KB5300-8X-0849 - What are the different settings governing server-side object cache usage in Strategy Intelligence Server 8.x
In Strategy 9, the following changes are made to this setting:
1. This setting is changed to show the value in MB instead of KB.
2. The default value of this setting has been raised to 100 MB (102,400 KB). It is not that the cache is using significantly more memory in Strategy 9. It is now more accurately reflecting the amount of memory that it is used by an object. The upper bound (maximum value) for this setting is 4096000 KB which is approximately 4 GB. This limit is unlikely to be hit especially in a 32 bit machine.
Note: In Strategy Desktop 9.0.0, the Maximum RAM Usage for server side and client side shows a value of 10MB, although the value in the backend is 100MB. This has been addressed in Strategy Desktop 9.0.1.
Configuring Configuration Object Caches
Configuration object caches cannot be configured. However, the default value for the lower bound and upper bound is the same as for application and schema objects, which is 102400KB (100MB) and 4096000KB (~3.9GB) respectively.
