KB30248: ScanMD installation fails with a Self-Registration Error message

SYMPTOM:
The following error happens during the ScanMD installation:

Self-Registration Error
The following files did not self-register or unregister:
1. <install path>\MCCmDInfoC.dll
This application has failed to start because the application configuration is incorrect. Reinstalling the application may fix the problem.
2. <install path>\SMRsRT.dll
This application has failed to start because the application configuration is incorrect. Reinstalling the application may fix the problem. 
 
CAUSE:
There are two possible causes of this error:
TN: 35809 - Using ScanMD to fix known logical metadata inconsistencies in the Strategy 9.x Product Suite

1. Users try to install the ScanMD on an unsupported operating system. Please see more details on the operating system requirements in:
2. The operating system is missing Microsoft Visual C++ 2005 SP1 Redistributable Package (x86).

 
ACTION:
Carry out the following steps:

1. Remove ScanMD.
2. Download and install the Microsoft Visual C++ 2005 SP1 Redistributable Package (x86).  Click on the following link and follow the instructions to install "vcredist_x86.exe":  http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?familyid=200B2FD9-AE1A-4A14-984D-389C36F85647&displaylang=en
3. Install ScanMD.
