KB30468: How to set up a custom message display when no data is returned in a Report Services Document in MicroStrategy Desktop 9.4.1 - Developer 10.x

This article describes how to set up a custom message display when no data is returned in a Report Services Document in MicroStrategy Desktop 9.4.1 - Developer 10.x

In  Strategy Desktop 9.4.1 - Developer 10.x users can setup conditional formatting based on metric values in text boxes to simulate custom messages.

To reproduce in Strategy Tutorial, execute the following:

  • Create a new report ReportA with the attributes Region and Quarter and a metric Profit in it. In this example, an additional Region element of A has been added that will bring back a value of 100 to be used in this example, which will be filter on for this report.
  • Create another new report ReportB with attributes Region and Quarter and metric Profit in it. As above, another Region element B has been added and will return a value of zero which we will filter on.
  • Add ReportA to a new Report Services Document and then add the Profit metric from ReportA to be rendered in a textbox. Set the conditional formatting for the metric to be Profit(RegionA) EXACTLY 0 and set the custom message as shown below.

  • Add ReportB to the above Document and then add Profit metric from ReportB. Set the conditional formatting for the metric to Profit(RegionB) EXACTLY 0 and set the custom message as shown below.

Now the custom message that is displayed for ReportB for it's Profit metric has a value of zero, whereas Region A does not and therefore displays the actual value.
