While using remote administration, services are unable to be executed immediately and new services cannot be created in MicroStrategy Narrowcast Server 9.x - 10.x. Also, the system status appears as 'Not Running' when it is running.

SYMPTOM:
While using remote administration, services are unable to be executed immediately and new services cannot be created in Strategy Narrowcast Server 9.x - 10.x. Also, the system status appears as 'Not Running' when it is running.

After running a service immediately, the following error occurs:

UnexpectedError: Object variable or With block variable not set.

Additionally, the following error occurs in the Windows Event Viewer:

ka04W000000OhlyQAC_0EM440000002B40.jpeg

DCOM was unable to communicate with the computer XXX using any of the configured protocols.

CAUSE:
A possible cause for this issue is the blockage of port 135 by a firewall or VPN configuration between the remote machine and the machine hosting Strategy Narrowcast Server 9.x - 10.x. Port 135 is used by the Microsoft DCOM Service Control Manager. The DCOM Service Control Manager service running on the server machine opens a connection on port 135 and listens for any incoming requests from clients to locate the ports where DCOM services can be found.

Port 135 is not only used by Strategy Narrowcast Server 9.x - 10.x but by every application that uses DCOM. Strategy Narrowcast Server 9.x - 10.x relies on DCOM to provide remote administration, therefore, if port 135 is blocked, remote administration will not be possible.

ACTION:
Contact the network administration and unblock communications on port 135 from client machines to the machine hosting Strategy Narrowcast Server 9.x - 10.x to use remote administration.
